Thursday Sept 28th: Arrival day
Choose to arrive a few days earlier and explore Launceston and meet us at our accommodation. Or fly in to today and be picked up at the airport and driven to The Best Western, Launceston. We will all join for dinner and meet our fellow walkers. (Dinner at your own expense)
Friday Sept 29th: Launceston to Cape Freycinet, Wineglass Bay Circuit. 11.5km.
An early morning pick up in Launceston, we will drive straight to Freycinet National park. The view over Coles Bay toward the Hazard Range Freycinet Peninsular draws us in to this iconic national park.
Enjoy a gorgeous 11.5km circuit walk which takes in the white sand beach of Wineglass Bay and the equally beautiful Hazards Beach on the other side of the Cape Freycinet isthmus.
After our walk, and perhaps an icy but refreshing swim, we can do the short drive down to our accommodation at Swansea Motor Lodge. It is a 3.5 star motel with a fabulous location offering sweeping views of Coles Bay and within walking distance of the town centre. (B, L, D included)
Saturday 30th September: Maria Island – Bishop and Clerk Walk – approx 5 hrs
It’s a short drive down to the quaint town of Triabunna and a short ferry ride across to Maria Island for our next adventure. There are are few options today, the most scenic is a challenging but rewarding climb up Mt Bishop and Clerk.
This walk is steep but the views from the dolerite columns at the summit of the mountain are sensational. The forested section of path offers delightful walking, with glimpses of ocean beyond the sheer cliffs.
For those wanting an easy day, there’s plenty to explore including the Painted Cliffs, the Fossil Cliffs and the old Darlington settlement, which has seen many transformations over the years.
After our ferry trip back to the mainland we’ll drive approx. 2 hrs down to Port Arthur where we will check into our accommodation for the evening at Port Arthur Motel. This motel wasn’t chosen for its early 90’s colour scheme but for the access your room key gives you to the grounds of Port Arthur to explore at your leisure. (B, L, D included)
Sunday October 1st: Cape Huay approx 4hr walk
With time for a look around Port Arthur in the morning, we will then take the short drive Tasman Peninsular to one of Tasmania’s most talked about walks. Cape Huay is part of the 3 Capes Track and is a definite highlight of this trip. Steep dolerite cliffs and unsurpassed views, it is little wonder this trail has become so popular so quickly.
The walk has its challenges with a long ascent back up. Trust me, it is more than worth it and is also a great walk for spotting echidnas!
After our walk, we will head into Hobart for our last night on the tour. Dinner in a local restaurant to celebrate a wonderful journey with your fellow walkers, staying at the Best Western.
(B, L, D included)
